"How many roses should I give?" — we hear it daily. Short answer: in Ukraine you give an odd number, scaled to the occasion. The long answer, with meanings, is below.
The main rule is odd numbers. Even counts are associated with mourning in Ukrainian tradition, so celebration bouquets use 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 15, 21, 25, 51 or 101. Many Western countries have no such rule — but in Ukraine, stick to it.
What the numbers mean. 1 rose — "you're the one". 3 — first-date classic. 5–7 — warm attention without pathos. 11 — a light romantic gesture, our starting count. 15–21 — birthdays and gratitude. 25 — anniversaries. 51 — declarations and big dates. 101 — the once-in-a-lifetime gesture: proposals, milestone anniversaries, a grown-up apology.
