How many flowers to give: odd and even numbers explained
WTF! What The Flowers florists · Dnipro
In Ukraine the living are given odd numbers. Where the rule stops applying, how many stems suit a jubilee, and when 101 roses actually make sense.
The rule is simple: in Ukraine the living receive an odd number of flowers, even numbers are brought to funerals. This is not superstition but a settled norm, and a breach is noticed immediately, so it is worth observing.
It does not always apply though. Past roughly eleven stems the count stops being readable at a glance and nobody counts. So in large bouquets, from twenty one stems upward, florists work to shape and volume rather than parity. Buy a bouquet of twenty five roses and no one will check.
Jubilees have their own logic. The classic approach is a stem per year, fifty flowers for fifty years, but in practice such a bouquet is enormous and awkward to carry. The compromise we recommend more often is one flower per decade, so five large roses or five hydrangeas, but in striking, premium varieties.
A word on 101 roses. It is not a gesture of "more is better" but a specific message, and it belongs at your own wedding, a proposal or a major anniversary. For a colleague birthday or a manager jubilee it creates awkwardness, because it puts the recipient in a position of having to respond.
And a practical note: a bouquet of more than fifty stems weighs several kilograms and needs a large vase. If you are not sure a vase exists, a basket arrangement is the safer choice, it needs nothing at all.
