Defenders Day in Ukraine, 1 October: how to mark it

Ukraine marks Defenders Day on 1 October. Where the date came from, who is honoured, what to say and give, and what to avoid.
Ukraine marks the Day of Defenders on 1 October. Until 2023 the holiday fell on 14 October; the date moved together with the shift to the new Julian calendar, under which Pokrova now falls on 1 October. In 2026 it lands on a Thursday.
The name changed too. The holiday was introduced in 2014 as Defender of Ukraine Day, and in 2021 it was officially renamed the Day of Defenders (men and women), because tens of thousands of women now serve. This is not a formality: congratulating «all the men» on this day misses the point.
Who is honoured. Not only those currently serving. Also veterans, volunteers, combat medics, chaplains, people who served earlier and returned to civilian life, and those in rear units whose work is less visible.
What to say. Short and personal beats grand statements. Sweeping lines about heroism land badly with many service members because they are impersonal. A specific thank you, or a plain «good to see you», sits closer. If someone does not want to talk about their service, the subject is left alone.
Flowers are given to both men and women on this day, as a normal gesture rather than a ceremony. The bouquet stays restrained: strict shape, deep colours, minimal decor. We wrote about how such a bouquet is built separately, in the piece on flowers for men.
Beyond flowers. Practical things a person will actually use, or a contribution to a specific unit fundraiser: many people ask directly for the fundraiser to be closed instead of a gift. That is no less appropriate than a bouquet, and often more so.
What to avoid. Do not wish a happy holiday to the families of those killed: for them this is a day of remembrance, not an occasion. Do not publish photos of service members, patches or locations without their permission. And do not turn a greeting into a request to hear «how it really is out there».
