Freesia: what it smells like and when not to give it

People buy freesia for the scent. It is complex, citrus and honey with a light peppery note, and it is the strongest fragrance among cut flowers. A single bouquet fills a room within half an hour.
Hence the one caveat: freesia is a poor choice for a hospital visit or for someone sensitive to smells. In a small bedroom it can feel overwhelming too. For a living room, a kitchen or an office it is exactly right.
The second trait is structural. One stem carries five to nine buds and they open in sequence, from the bottom up. So the bouquet does not fade all at once: while the upper buds are still closed, the lower ones already release scent. That stretches its life to ten or twelve days.
Care comes down to a single action: pick off the spent lower blooms. They draw nutrition from the buds still to come and spoil the look. Everything else is standard, trim every two days, clean water, flower food.
